Monasterolo del Castello

Church of Santissimo Salvatore

The church’s east-facing façade is striking for the elegant harmony of its proportions.

The architectural layout is organised into two superimposed orders: the lower order is marked by four Tuscan-style pilasters that divide the space into three regular sections. At the base, an elegant plinth in Poltragno stone lends solidity and distinction to the entire structure. The pilasters rise up to the entablature separating the first from the second level, whilst at the top a triangular pediment crowns the sacred building with balance and grace.
The interior opens into a nave divided into five bays, creating a harmonious and welcoming spatial rhythm. The side chapels, which are interconnected, almost give the impression of small side aisles, expanding the perception of space and enriching the visitor’s visual experience.
The chancel, slightly narrower than the nave and characterised by a rectangular plan, is covered by a barrel vault embellished with two deep splayed corners that enhance the light coming from the windows. The space culminates in the semicircular choir, covered by a vault divided into three segments, which lends the space a sense of contemplation and solemnity.
