Stone City is a true citadel of stone, a unique location in the world, at the heart of the Dolomite quarrying industry. Here you will find a spectacular itinerary for the exploration of valuable marbles, narrating a precious fragment of the area’s artistic and artisanal heritage.
Three thousand square metres, an area unique the world over, to discover a stone that has been quarried since Ancient Roman times: this is Stone City, a permanent exhibition park where you can discover the uses and settings created with Zandobbio Marble.
The latter is another name for Dolomia, white or pink, which is at the heart of an ancient family business launched in 1929 by the Sottocornola family. Over almost a century of quarrying, this stone has become famous for its ornamental value; an element of aesthetic prestige that has made it a feature of artistic creations in sacred locations and historical buildings since the 12th century.
From churches to buildings in the monumental heart of Bergamo’s Città Alta (Upper Town), the Victory Monument in Bolzano, the United Nations Offices in Geneva, right through to the Capitolio (national Capitol building) of Havana in Cuba, Zandobbio Marble is one of the ornamental stones that are used to clad History: a thread that links the little Val Cavallina with the rest of the world.
