Join Us to Save the Amphibians! 🐸
Nature is awakening and the first amphibians have already begun their migration! 🌱 With rising temperatures and rainfall on the way, we expect an explosion of movement: it’s time to take action!
Every year, hundreds of toads and other amphibians cross Provincial Road n° 76 to reach Lake Endine, where they lay their eggs, and then make the return journey. To protect them, temporary barriers are placed along the road. The volunteers’ task is crucial: to collect the amphibians blocked by the barriers and transport them safely in buckets to the other side of the road. Unfortunately, without our help, many of them are unable to complete their journey due to traffic. This is where we come in! 💪
The Census
In addition to rescue efforts, we will also carry out scientific monitoring. Volunteers will fill out forms identifying:
– Species: Toads (distinguishing between males and females), frogs, newts and salamanders;
– Direction: Specimens descending towards the lake or ascending towards the mountain.
This data is vital for checking the health and growth of the local population. To facilitate the task, we will provide intuitive forms with morphological indicators for quick and easy identification.
Logistical Information
– Meeting point: Car park adjacent to the Church of San Michele Arcangelo (Loc. San Felice, Endine Gaiano);
– Start time: 6.30 p.m. (standard time) / 7.30 p.m. (daylight saving time).
– Duration: The activity ends approximately between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. with the return of the cards to the contact persons (GEV or experts from the Mountain Community).
– Period: Rescue operations began on 26 February; ideal weather conditions for migration are rain/high humidity, no wind, temperature > 5°C. Rescue activities will continue until at least mid-April.
Note on punctuality: Maximum precision in terms of time is required. Experience from previous years
shows that even a short delay has a negative impact on the survival of amphibians.
