A village on the shores of Lake Endine that has fascinated illustrious personalities and entire generations. Welcome to Spinone al Lago.
“Rough in name, pleasant in appearance… with a dreamy lake in a green basin”. This is how Countess Winifred Terni de’ Gregory Taylor described Spinone al Lago.
The village is located above the Tonale state road SS42 that runs alongside the lake, on which the shops and tourist facilities are located.
Going up towards the historical centre, surrounded by greenery, is the splendid 13th-century church of San Pietro in Vincoli. Nothing remains in the village of the ancient Suardi castle, demolished in the 15th century to obey the Venetian decree ordering the demolition of numerous fortifications in the valley. The noble family from Bergamo restored an ancient building as their home, which is still partly recognisable today despite being considerably altered. In the stately residence, Saint Charles Borromeo is said to have stayed overnight in 1575 on his return from one of his pastoral visits to Val Seriana.
Today, the economy of Spinone al Lago is based on tourism and the San Carlo springs. Speaking of springs, a cold sulphurous mineral spring has been known and commercially exploited in the Tuf valley since 1900, first with a simple kiosk, then with a hotel-terme, and today with a water bottling plant.
If you are thirsty, therefore, you can take advantage of the kiosk that the municipality has set up to provide free access to the spring.
