The Consorzio Tutela Moscato di Scanzo, whose origins date back to 1982, was created to protect Italy’s smallest DOCG (Controlled and Guaranteed Designation of Origin) label.
The Consorzio di Tutela was founded in December 1993 by transforming what was then the Associazione Produttori Moscato di Scanzo (Association of Moscato di Scanzo Producers), founded in December 1982.
The first objective of the newly-formed Consortium was to obtain a Designation separate from Valcalepio wines. This was achieved by the Ministerial Decree of 17 April 2002, which established the new Denomination “Moscato di Scanzo DOC” or “Scanzo DOC” (in which DOC refers to “Controlled Designation of Origin”).
However, the distinctive features and unique identity of Moscato di Scanzo required a more prestigious designation. On 12 February 2009, the Ministry of Agricultural Policy, after consulting with the Comitato Nazionale Vini (National Wine Committee), granted the request made by the Consortium, awarding Moscato di Scanzo the status of Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG, Controlled and Guaranteed Designation of Origin), making it the first and only DOCG in Bergamo and the fifth in the Region of Lombardy.
Moscato di Scanzo was recognised as a DOCG wine with the Ministerial Decree of 28 April 2009. Therefore, as from the year 2007, producers were able to apply the DOCG designation, guaranteeing the product’s status and quality. Today the Consortium for the Protection of Moscato di Scanzo is actively engaged in its enhancement, popularity and promotion by means of a variety of actions.
