The Re/Meris Palace is a restored neoclassical building dating from the 18th-19th centuries, now belonging to the municipality and upgraded in recent years. In itself it forms an important part of Ranzanico’s history.
The external decorations are in the Art Nouveau style (in Italian, “stile liberty”) and these, together with its frescoes interiors (lovering and other artists) distinguish it from the surrounding houses.
The building is located on the periphery with respect to the historic town centre and there is a vast orchard garden facing the house, with terraces sloping down the surrounding hill-sides.
The architecture of the house divides it into three distinct parts, as seen clearly on maps from the 19th century, and forms an L-shape along the road leading to the Oratory of San Bernardino.
The building has been modified several times before assuming its current aspect.
Amongst the more eminent families of owners that form part of the house’s history are the Suardi. Rocco and Giacomo Suardi, descendants of the ancient, noble family resident in Ranzanico, started a silk-production and silk-weaving enterprise locally, building the great Filanda (silk mill) in the lower part of town, along the SS 42 highway.
