Over 25 years of enthusiasm for quality wine. The Angelo Pecis winery is in San Paolo d’Argon and makes the finest wines of the Bergamo area according to traditional techniques, offering the possibility of tasting and purchasing, with guided tours of the vineyards and cellars.
The Angelo Pecis winery is in San Paolo d’Argon, at the foot of the like-named hill, 10 km from Bergamo. Founded 25 years ago as a result of Carlo Pecis’ long-standing passion for wine, it was later expanded by his son Angelo, who currently runs it together with his wife Marialaura.
The two and a half hectares of vineyard surrounding the small church – land and church were once owned by the monastery of San Paolo d’Argon – constitute the farm’s original holding, to which the property in Cenate Sotto was later added, with an additional three hectares of vineyards.
The grape varieties grown are principally those specified by the Valcalepio DOC (Controlled Designation of Origin) regulations, namely Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon for the red wine, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay for the white, and Moscato di Scanzo for the passito raisin wine. Smaller areas are dedicated to vineyards of Franconia (a vine of Austrian origin) and Moscato Giallo, for which, though volumes may be low, quality is exceptional.
The wine cellars comprise two separate and adjoining structures. One part is dedicated to vinification, which is still performed using natural criteria: the farm’s staff believe that technology should not predominate over the skilled work of human hands. The other part is used for ageing (in wooden barrels, barriques and bottles) and storage. There are also areas dedicated to receiving visitors and for guided tastings.
Production
The Angelo Pecis Winery’s production includes the four Valcalepio DOC wines (Red, Red Reserve, White and Moscato Passito raisin wine) and Imberghem (Terre del Colleoni – Franconia DOC). Three Metodo Classico (champagne method) sparkling wines are made: Pecis Maximus Brut, named in honour of the eldest son Massimo, Gaio delle Passere Dry (Moscato Giallo) and Quadrifoglio Rosé Brut (Franconia), dedicated to Marialaura. Lastly, there is Laurenzio (Moscato Giallo della Bergamasca IGT, Typical Geographical Indication), a passito raisin wine dedicated to Angelo’s second son, Lorenzo.
The approach
The Pecis family are always happy to accompany visitors on their discovery of the farm and its wines. In fact, they lavish the same welcome both on professionals and passers-by who share an enthusiasm for wine and wish to find out more about the history of the wines of the Bergamo area, understand how the winery operates, breathing in the fragrance of the cellars where the wines come to life and age, strolling amongst the vines, savouring the terroir with all their senses, exchanging opinions and enjoying a convivial tasting experience.
